Grand Ledge commission recommends playground rules for Jaycee Park

The Grand Ledge Parks and Recreation Commission on April 23 voted unanimously to recommend that City Council consider a proposed set of rules for Jaycee Park’s playground.

Commissioner Teri Langley distributed the draft rules and moved that the Commission recommend City Council adopt her version; Commissioner Amber Slocum seconded the motion, which carried unanimously. The motion text presented to the Commission included a recommendation to forward "Commissioner Langley’s version of the rules as presented" to City Council.

The proposed rules list the following requirements and prohibitions: "Young children must be supervised by an adult;" the playground is an "alcohol and tobacco-free zone;" glass containers are prohibited; scooters, skateboards and rollerblades are to be used only on sidewalk areas; pets must be kept outside the play area; vandalism (use of paint or markers) is prohibited; climbing is allowed only in the play area and not on or near the fence; and anyone engaging in behavior that threatens the safety or enjoyment of others will be asked to leave the park. Commissioner Langley presented the list for Commission consideration and discussion prior to the recommendation.

Commissioners discussed adjustments and implementation considerations before approving the recommendation. The minutes record the motion as carried unanimously; the meeting’s roll call shows nine commissioners present. The recommendation now proceeds to City Council for their consideration at a subsequent meeting.

The Commission left implementation details—such as signage design, enforcement responsibilities, and timing—to staff and City Council review.
