Superintendent’s report highlights inservice, AK‑TRAILS and Greenhouse/Ag program

Superintendent Rod Morrison opened the administrative reports at the Southeast Island School District board meeting on Aug. 21, 2024, with updates on training and inservice, the first day of school, staff longevity recognitions and staffing needs.
Morrison invited department and school leaders to share highlights. Principal/Dean of Students Shaine Nixon summarized projects and staffing; AK‑TRAILS Program Coordinator Cassandra Christopherson reported on enrollments, learning plan progress and advertising for the AK‑TRAILS Handbook; Lead Teacher Lisa Cates described inservice, hiring and planned events at Hollis School. Business contractor Lucienne Smith welcomed staff and maintenance director Scott Randall outlined ongoing support tasks including wood boiler training and front stairs maintenance at the Thorne Bay campus.
Greenhouse/Ag Program Manager Brandy Schmitz‑Prefontaine gave a presentation on the district’s Greenhouse/Agriculture program. The presentation was followed later in the meeting by public comment from Hesperus Keys, who raised concerns or comments regarding the greenhouses.
These reports were informational and no separate motions were recorded specifically to alter program structure; however, the board approved related facility work (authorized stairs) and administrative handbooks during the same meeting, which affect operational support and personnel implementation for the school year.
