Directors questioned the unit’s practicality and portability; staff and operations said the generator has a roughly 300-gallon fuel tank, weighs about 10,000 pounds, is trailer-mounted and will be stored under cover in a container when not in use. Staff said the generator is sized to run the district’s wells in grouped clusters (about three wells by cord length) and could provide backup to permanent standby generators when needed.
Board members said the unit is a valuable resilience investment that would help sustain approximately 20% of the district’s annual water demand from the canyon during pump season. The motion to authorize purchase passed on a recorded vote.
Staff said the purchase uses a cooperative to obtain competitive pricing and that the district has vehicles and procedures to relocate the unit when required. The board recorded the roll-call vote approving the purchase and will receive implementation details through staff reports.
