The New London School District board approved revisions to the employee handbook and to the parent/student handbook after a series of staff presentations and board questions about specific provisions.
On the employee handbook, staff recommended clarifications including a cash‑in‑lieu payment of $3,500 for employees who waive district insurance, a requirement that unpaid leave requests be submitted 10 days in advance when possible, retirement recognition timing (notice by Sept. 1), and a sick‑leave payout proposal for certified staff of $50 per unused day up to $3,000 (with 60 unused days as the payout threshold). Board members asked for clarity on how the $3,500 figure was calculated. A staff presenter said the amount was based on recent insurance savings and recommended the round number be revisited annually.
Board director Chris Bartonsen moved to approve the employee handbook as presented; the chair seconded and the board voted in favor by voice vote.
On the parent/student handbook, staff listed updates to administrative leadership names, attendance language (including an added provision that seniors absent nine or more full days in the second semester may not participate in graduation), additions to school‑to‑work and youth apprenticeship language, expanded technology and device rules (including smartwatches and other smart devices) and clearer transportation pickup guidance (students should be ready five minutes prior to scheduled pickup). Board members discussed transparency of meeting schedules and concerns that some parking/loitering language could be subjective; staff agreed to tidy wording but the board approved the packet revisions.
Both approvals were framed as housekeeping and policy‑alignment steps intended to improve clarity for staff, students and families; more detailed compensation and degree‑related language will be referred to the compensation committee for specific drafting.
