County receives $1.38 million Aeronautics grant for ARW hangar site work; site contract set for county review

Beaufort County airport staff told the board the county has been awarded a South Carolina Aeronautics grant of roughly $1.38 million to support ARW hangar site work, lowering the county's cost share and moving the project toward county committee and council review.
"We've applied for a grant for the site work portion of that and we were awarded a grant for, I think, round about 1,300,000," John, the airport director, said; another board member clarified the amount as "1.38." The director added that a partner (Aeronox) changed its cost-share formula from a prior 40/60 split to 30/70, meaning the county’s share is now about 30 percent.
The director said the grant and project details will go before the county finance committee and then to county council; staff expects the site-work contract (Gulfstream Construction) to appear on the council agenda the same day the finance committee reviews it. The director asked board members to block time for the finance committee meeting so supporters can attend.
Board members discussed the timing and the point when dirt-moving dates will prompt increased interest from pilots on the hangar waiting list; staff said they'll refine exact schedule dates after committee approval and will develop a plan to manage the waiting list and communications.
The board did not vote to award the site-work contract at this meeting; staff said it was already or will be approved by committee before council consideration.
