Brandon officials target water, sewer projects for FY2027 congressional funding; fire-station work lacks biddable plans

BRANDON, Miss. — City officials told the board on March 2 they plan to prioritize water and sewer projects for a congressional appropriations packet after an invitation from Congressman Michael Guest's office.
The mayor said the congressman's office is seeking projects for fiscal 2027 and encouraged the city to turn in projects by the Friday deadline he referenced. Staff and board members discussed potential candidates that could be produced quickly, including a Crossgates sewer rehabilitation project and replacement of AC and concrete pipes where linear footage allows for a shovel-ready scope. Matthew Miller, a staff member, said there is usable inventory to assemble a project and that the city could generate a project "pretty quickly".
Board members asked whether fire-station renovations would be competitive. Staff said the congressman's office has emphasized infrastructure such as water, sewer and roads, though a fire station might still be considered. The board acknowledged it does not yet have biddable designs for two proposed stations (Marquette and Woodgate) and therefore cannot prepare immediate federal submittals for those projects.
The mayor also noted a prior appropriation listed the city receiving $1.5 million toward a water tower but said that figure was a typo and the correct amount is $1.25 million per confirmation from the congressman's office. The mayor asked staff to prepare CIP project materials quickly so the city can submit the most competitive applications.
