Eaton board recommends raising accessory-structure height limits to match Ohio code to accommodate RV storage

The Eaton Planning, Zoning and Building Board voted unanimously on May 12, 2026, to recommend that Eaton City Council amend Section 1113.05 of the Unified Development Ordinance to align accessory building height limits with the State of Ohio Building Code.
Assistant City Manager Joe Ferriell asked the board to consider the change, saying the current 15-foot cap on accessory storage and recreational structures has created complications for residents seeking to store recreational vehicles and campers. The proposed text posted for board consideration replaces the single 15-foot limit with a maximum wall height of 16 feet and a maximum mean roof height of 20 feet for storage accessory structures; the same numeric change was proposed for recreational accessory structures.
Gary Wagner moved to give a favorable recommendation to Eaton City Council to change the Height section of 1113.05 of the UDO to conform with the State of Ohio Building Code; Manfred Treitmaier seconded. The motion passed 7–0 (Ayes: Daily, Kirsch, Lane, Ott, Schaeffer, Treitmaier, Wagner; Nays: None).
The recommendation now goes to Eaton City Council, which must consider and adopt the ordinance change before the modified height limits take effect.
