Walton County schedules July 28 e‑bike hearing after engineers flag eMotos and safety risks

The Walton County Board scheduled a July 28 public hearing on a proposed e‑bike ordinance after engineering staff summarized a public workshop and survey and highlighted safety concerns.
Engineering told commissioners the two most prominent issues from public input were eMotos being marketed as e‑bikes and the presence of higher‑speed class‑3 e‑bikes operating on multi‑use paths and public right‑of‑ways. Staff proposed draft restrictions including limiting class‑3 e‑bike operation and establishing a minimum operator age for certain higher‑speed devices. An engineering speaker said materials and a draft ordinance will be posted on the county’s engineering website ahead of the July 28 hearing so the public can review and provide more informed feedback.
A medical/public‑safety speaker warned about traumatic injuries from higher‑speed devices and urged helmet use and public education: "If you are going 28 miles an hour and you hit a rock... that's a lot of risk for traumatic injury," the speaker said. Commissioners discussed enforcement challenges and education; several asked for videos and outreach materials to accompany the posted draft.
The board voted 4–0 to set the public hearing for July 28 and directed staff to publish the workshop summary and draft ordinance on the engineering website before that meeting.
