The Pamlico County Board of Education approved routine business and heard a series of updates at its March meeting, including enrollment figures, student program highlights and a construction progress report on the district’s new school.
By voice vote the board approved February open- and closed-session minutes and the consent agenda. The board also approved adding June 12 and 13 as optional workdays to the 2026 calendar to make up earlier snow closures.
Dr. Johnson, the superintendent, reported district enrollment at 1,118 students, a net increase of four since the prior report: Pamlico County Primary increased by three to 338; Fred Anderson Elementary remained at 144; the middle school added two to 245; and the high school decreased by one to 391.
Students from the district’s SkillsUSA chapter presented to the board, describing how the program builds leadership, communication and technical skills. "It will benefit me in the future and will prepare me for future careers," one student said, while advisors and the superintendent praised the chapter’s growth.
Principals from the primary, middle and high schools offered updates. Sharon Carter Moore (Fred Anderson) described PBIS-focused small-group instruction, community donations for field trips and a Title I math night scheduled for April 15. Josh Gaskell (Pamlico County Middle School) highlighted student engagement activities and spring athletics. High-school principal Rebecca Lanchie described the school’s recent accreditation process and played a brief video showcasing student-led programming.
Construction and facilities staff reported the new school remains on schedule, with foundation work, rebar and initial basement systems in place and geothermal well drilling underway. Work on the new baseball field is advanced; one dugout is complete, the second is underway, and lights and a scoreboard remain pending.
On policy, the board waived Policy 1514 for first reading and approved a revision to Policy 2310 to specify that the board attorney will enforce the three-minute public-comment time limit. The board then moved into closed session to consider confidential student and personnel matters pursuant to North Carolina law, returned to open session and approved a personnel report by motion.
The board set special-call budget meetings for April 8 and April 15 and confirmed Representative Keith Kidwell will visit Pamlico County Schools on April 28. The board adjourned the meeting after completing business.
