An informational video published by Santa Rosa City walks viewers through the responsibilities of city council members and how the mayor and vice mayor are selected.
"The most visible role of council members is at council meetings," the Presenter said, noting those meetings are where council members approve the city budget and adopt resolutions and ordinances that set Santa Rosa City's goals and priorities. The Presenter added that council meetings are only one part of members’ work.
A Staff member in the video described duties beyond the dais: reviewing lengthy agenda packets, serving on subcommittees, attending community events on behalf of the city, and participating on regional and state committees to represent Santa Rosa City and coordinate with higher levels of government. "They serve on council subcommittees and attend community events on behalf of the city of Santa Rosa," the Staff member said.
The video also reminded viewers that council decision‑making is governed by ethics and transparency laws that require public visibility and address conflicts of interest. As the Staff member put it, "In all city council decision making, council members are bound by ethics and transparency laws that require public visibility and address any conflict of interest when conducting city business."
On the mayoral role, the Presenter said the mayor shares council duties but also presides over meetings, sets the agenda, reviews and signs resolutions and ordinances, and acts as a ceremonial representative of the city. The video states the mayor serves a two‑year term and the vice mayor a one‑year term, and clarifies that "Council members select the mayor and vice mayor from amongst themselves."
The video closes by inviting prospective candidates and interested residents to view the next installment, which will cover candidate eligibility and the process for running for council, and by directing viewers to links in the video description for more information.
