Public Art Commission highlights trailhead projects and asks commission to fund cultural plan

Key accomplishments cited included conservation cleaning of the Father Marquette statue, a completed Freedom Monument installed and dedicated July 4, initiation of landscape-based public art at Lions Lakeside Park, and approval of rotating art for story markers along the cultural trail. Hobbins said MPAC has secured funding for memberships with the Midwest Art Conservation Center and leveraged a Mellon Foundation-funded professional-development opportunity for staff.
MPAC also described planned installations: a ceiling sculpture at the cultural trailhead by Hans Gottsacker, a ceramic fireplace surround at the trailhead, a phased '7 Grandfathers' monument redesign (phase 2) with an anticipated fall installation, and a new story marker to be approved in August with predicted fall installation. Hobbins asked the commission to consider funding for a cultural plan in the FY27 budget to guide larger projects, community engagement and maintenance needs.
Commissioners praised the commission's work and encouraged continued public engagement and fundraising for larger-scale projects.
Next steps: MPAC will finalize designs, seek approvals for written content and installation timing, and the commission will consider the FY27 request for a cultural plan during budget discussions.
