City approves MDNR waterways grant for Cinderpond Marina pier replacement

The Marquette City Commission voted July 13 to accept a Michigan Department of Natural Resources waterways grant recommendation for replacement of floating piers at Cinderpond Marina.
City staff told the commission the estimated total project cost is $3,388,000 and the DNR grant would cover 50% of that cost, not to exceed $1,694,000. The grant proceeds are earmarked for design and construction; upon approval the city may proceed with engineering, demolition of existing piers, and construction of a new floating dock system, with professional design and construction oversight to be contracted.
City Manager staff noted the local match ($1,694,000) is anticipated to be incorporated in the city's FY27 capital improvement program and financed through the city's capital financing plan and bond issuance, subject to future commission approval of the FY27 budget and any financing authorizations.
Commissioner Ottaway moved to approve the waterways grant agreement and authorize the city manager or designee to sign the agreement; Commissioner Hanley seconded. The motion passed on a roll-call vote of 5–0.
Next steps: Staff will proceed to engineering and design; construction is anticipated in winter 2026–27 with demolition and installation completed before the 2027 boating season.
