Multiple parents, coaches and Little League volunteers asked the council to add a proposed Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the city and Cordova Little League to the April 1 agenda so the youth season is not disrupted.
“My name is Sherman. I’m the father to two enthusiastic baseball players… I’m here to urge you to include the Cordova Little League MOU be added to the April 1 agenda,” said Sherman (speaker S10), who described the volunteer workload and the urgency of registration deadlines.
Maya Vina (S20), identified as a coach and vice president of the league, said the MOU “reflects a long‑standing partnership between the city and our volunteer‑driven program” and that registration opens April 1. She asked the council to resolve the MOU or otherwise make clear the league’s 2026 fee status so the season can proceed without unexpected charges.
Council members debated whether to act April 1 or wait for a staff presentation at a planned April 9 work session. Several council members said a work session would provide fuller information about costs, facility maintenance and what the MOU should require; others urged a temporary fee hold to avoid hurting the season. A council member noted the city manager had already placed fees “on hold” while the city works with the league.
Council discussed two near‑term options: (1) add an April 1 agenda item to adopt a resolution waiving fees for Little League for 2026 pending an MOU; or (2) confirm a status‑quo hold on fees while the April 9 work session proceeds and staff prepares a recommended MOU. Several members supported a targeted, single‑season fee waiver for Little League that would not automatically set a precedent for all nonprofits.
The council did not adopt a final resolution at the meeting but directed staff and council leadership to prepare an April 1 item to address the league’s immediate season needs and to continue substantive work at the April 9 session.
Speakers repeatedly emphasized the league’s volunteer nature and the importance of predictable timelines for families and organizers; staff and council agreed to take steps so the league can proceed without immediate financial disruption while the MOU is finalized.
