Commission hears plan to replace skaters cabin; director seeks down payment and community fundraising

The Parson Recreation Commission on Sept. 30 reviewed plans to replace a skaters cabin the department removed after structural and fire-code concerns.
The director said Wilson's removed the collapsed roof and the structure presented a safety hazard, and she highlighted vendor kits and options for a replacement. "It was getting really bad ... we didn't have, all the funding for it, but we did I did get approval to have it taken down with the funding from my skate park, because of the hazard that it was," the director said.
She presented example vendor pricing: the director said one kit option was "about a $100,000" (not including shipping, foundation or civil engineering) and that moving forward would require an initial payment of about $20,000 to start design and engineering. She proposed phasing the project — fund the kit first, then address engineering and site work — and described ongoing efforts to pursue grants, local donations and a Patronicity campaign to raise community contributions.
Commissioners discussed whether donors would prefer to fund a visible element (the cabin) rather than engineering costs; the director said she would prepare a funding breakdown showing what remains unfunded and would include volunteer contributions where possible. She said that if the kit is funded first that may spur further contributions toward the remaining work.
Next steps: the director will continue grant applications, refine the fundraising pitch and return updates to the commission.
