She warned contractor schedules may delay repairs into November and said reopening will depend on certified lifeguards becoming available.
The director also said many lifeguard certifications have lapsed; while she has retained an instructor to run small certification classes, full programming may take weeks. "We're gonna have a huge amount of people that have, their certifications as have lapsed for lifeguarding," she said, adding the department can run small classes of about 10 people at a time while recertifications are scheduled.
The director flagged grant prospects to offset planning and capital work. She said the Cordova Community Foundation intends to offer a mapping grant of roughly $15,000 for a 2026 mapping effort and that the department hopes to secure smaller bridge funding for the current year.
The chair and commissioners asked whether public outreach for the master plan had been completed; the director said most outreach had already been done and that consultants would return for additional outreach if the commission directs either option.
