Committee hears staff updates on parks, cemetery and South Avenue K; postpones capital-project list

City staff provided updates on public‑works staffing, cemetery and parks work and ongoing street projects, and the committee postponed deciding a prioritized list of capital projects until more assessment data is available.
Pat Gallegos reported there are 37 positions in public works and the department currently has two vacancies, and he said staff expect to fill those openings soon. Gallegos also said the city has begun work with SemSite to establish a cemetery web site and that staff are preparing cemetery rules and fee updates for future review.
On parks, staff said Confort Park has been hooked to a reuse irrigation system and that staff will next evaluate Lindsay, Morrison and Rotary Park. Committee members discussed evaluating restrooms and concession stands — some facilities may be partially rebuilt or repaired — and agreed to focus on durable fixtures for longevity.
Miss McVay reported construction of sidewalks on South Avenue K is underway and that staff are preparing two RFPs for sewer and stormwater work on Kilgore; she said staff are watching capital outlay agreements and plan to execute projects promptly once funding is signed.
Committee members also discussed tree‑planting proposals and volunteer efforts. Members suggested delaying some plantings until water availability is assured; a senior citizens group offered to host a staff appreciation lunch and staff agreed to confirm timing.
On item A — formulating a list of three to five projects for the capital management plan — staff said they prefer to wait for the full road assessment and recommended postponement. A motion to postpone the item passed by voice vote.
The committee set its next meeting for August 11 at 10:30 a.m. and adjourned.
