North East officials report progress on water‑plant projects, transportation planning and local development

Town of North East officials used the Nov. 12 meeting to update the board and public on infrastructure, planning and community events.
Mayor Kelly RyB Benson reviewed recent meetings on borrowing bonds and permitting questions, discussions about the North East Middle School, and consultations with the town engineer and water superintendent on the Rolling Mill and Leslie water‑treatment plants. He said he raised the North East Preserve and permitting questions at the Cecil County Transportation Plan meeting and met with Maryland Department of Transportation officials about alternative‑transportation funds for pedestrian infrastructure.
Town Administrator Melissa Cook‑MacKenzie summarized parallel staff work: coordination with the director of planning and grant writer on Riverwoods expansion, development inquiries for sites on Route 272 and Route 40, engagement with tourism officials about lodging, and continued personnel and ordinance‑review work. Assistant Town Administrator Grant Handley reported the Leslie Pond sediment project has begun and that the Old Town Hall Lock Up is slated for completion by Thanksgiving 2025; he offered a proposed site tour on Dec. 3.
Handley also said the town submitted its annual progress report to the Maryland Department of the Environment and that the North East Preserve site has been walked in coordination with the contractor and Department of Natural Resources. He noted street and sidewalk data have been passed to the civil engineer for upcoming design work.
The reports covered ongoing projects rather than formal actions; the meeting contained no new ordinances or resolutions for introduction or adoption. The board moved from reports to appropriations and adjourned at 7:50 p.m.
