Kenly council approves fraud-prevention banking service, tree-removal contract and phone transition

At its Oct. 13 meeting the Kenly Town Council approved a set of administrative contracts and operational measures by unanimous votes.
Interim Town Manager Tony Sears presented a free fraud-prevention 'positive pay' service from Southern Bank that verifies check numbers and amounts; the council voted to join the service (Motion: Council Member LaWanda Neal; Second: Council Member Keith Davis; Vote: APPROVED 3-0).
The council approved contractor bids to clear trees and limbs near aerial sewer lines at the wastewater treatment plant after receiving several quotes; Asplundh submitted the lowest bid at $22,873 and will remove and grind trees on-site on property where the truck stop has granted permission (Motion: Council Member LaWanda Neal; Second: Council Member Keith Davis; Vote: APPROVED 3-0).
The council also approved a switch from the North Carolina Department of Information Technology (NCDIT) telephone service to a Voice over Internet Protocol system through Carolina Digital Phone. The approved two-year contract includes a one-time phone cost of $1,900 and a monthly service charge of $297; the system includes redundancy so cellular service can be used if the fiber connection fails and features to block spam calls (Motion: Council Member Mark Smith; Second: Council Member Keith Davis; Vote: APPROVED 3-0).
With no further business, the council adjourned at 7:55 p.m.
