Kenly advances $16 million water and sewer work; crews have laid pipe and set deadlines

Public Works Director John Pitts updated the Kenly Town Council on Oct. 13 that contractors are mobilized on a $16 million water and sewer program and have already completed initial work.
Pitts said crews have laid roughly 1,600 feet of pipe and installed two new hydrants; upcoming work includes boring from Eaglewood to 7th Street to connect lines that will serve the Kennedy Court apartment area and connecting a 1,700-foot pipe to Rebel Road, a connection officials said has been needed for 27 years. Locates for sewer work are complete and laying new sewer pipe on Wig Street is expected to begin within one to two weeks.
The council was told the project’s substantial completion deadline is Nov. 10 and final completion must occur by Dec. 10. Pitts also noted replacement of eight air-relief valves (estimated at approximately $1,700 each) and that larger lift-station generators purchased via grant have shipped and are expected to arrive within about 30 days for installation.
Council members received the update as informational; no formal vote was taken on these project items at the Oct. 13 meeting.
