Council approves $430,000 summer sidewalk repair project; bids set for July 28

The Iowa City Council on July 14 approved the 2026 summer sidewalk repair project, which targets Region 10 in the northeast part of the city as part of a rotating 10-year inspection and repair schedule.
Tyler Olson, senior engineer, said the program inspects sidewalks and notifies adjoining property owners of required repairs, then compiles a list for city-contracted repair work. The program's goals are pedestrian safety and complete-streets mobility. Olson said the estimated construction cost for this year's project is $430,000, funded from the annual sidewalk-repair program fund. Staff plans to issue bid documents the day after the meeting and hold a bid letting on July 28; if bids meet expectations, council will consider contract award at the Aug. 4 meeting and construction would start later this summer with completion in the fall.
Olson said routine complaints outside the targeted region are accepted and can be added to projects; severe hazards can be prioritized sooner. Councilors asked about city-owned sidewalks and frequency of inspection; staff said right-of-way sidewalks are inspected as part of the program.
The council approved the resolution to proceed with the project by roll call, 6–0.
