Stamping Ground approves $3,695 trailer for police; department seeks camera and MDT upgrades

The Stamping Ground commission on Oct. 1 approved the purchase of a 6x12 trailer for police equipment storage for $3,695, with Streets funds to be used to cover the cost. The motion, made by Commissioner Billy Swartz and seconded by Commissioner Jennifer Jones, passed 5-0.
Police Chief Don Whitlock told commissioners the department needs to complete an encroachment form to retain digital speed signs and reported locating a trailer that would store barricades, cones and equipment. Commissioner Swartz indicated Streets funds were available to pay for the purchase.
Chief Whitlock said the department is evaluating locations for Flock cameras and is pursuing permission from Kentucky Utilities and AT&T to mount a Condor 360-degree camera on a KU pole. He also said three mobile data terminal (MDT) laptops—one for each patrol vehicle, including a backup vehicle—are overdue for replacement; he estimated roughly $3,000 per unit and said the department will search for grants to offset cost.
Chief Whitlock additionally raised the need to ensure payments for a possible SRO (school resource officer) contract are being received as promised and noted the department is investigating the origin of a high-powered rifle shot reported in the area. The minutes record no formal action beyond the trailer purchase.
