Commissioners hear Red River Valley Water Supply Project update; joint meeting proposed

Steve Burian updated the Richland County commissioners on Aug. 6 about the Red River Valley Water Supply Project and next steps for potential users.
Burian described two main uses the project foresees for delivered water: selling treated water to industry and managed aquifer recharge. He asked potential users to complete a Memorandum of Commitment in July/August and a Project Participation Agreement by December. Burian said Minnesota entities cannot be direct members of the project and that a separate local entity would need to advocate for Breckenridge if that city wishes to participate.
Commissioner Rollie Ehlert asked how long it would take to fill Wahpeton’s aquifer; Burian said he would calculate and get back to the board. Commissioner Perry Miller proposed organizing a joint meeting with interested parties later in the week to work on a Memorandum of Commitment. No formal action was taken at the Aug. 6 meeting; commissioners discussed next steps.
