At the Sept. 17 meeting, the Occoquan Town Council reviewed a staff proposal to raise council compensation from the statutory $1 per month. Members discussed the time commitment expected of councilors, the potential budgetary impact of a pay increase, how compensation might affect public perception of service, and whether higher pay would make council service more attractive. The council elected not to propose an increase; the matter was tabled indefinitely.
Separately, the council received a presentation from Mr. Forman about the town's National Weather Service StormReady' certification. The council was told signage will be posted at the town's entrances, that the certification invites a review of hazardous-weather plans, and that the designation may help residents qualify for National Flood Insurance Program premium reductions.
Mayor Earnie Porta and members thanked staff for raising the compensation issue and for the StormReady briefing.
