Board advances large policy package to second reading and approves Juneau legislative travel
Summary

The Denali Borough School District board voted to advance a set of policy documents to a second reading and separately approved district travel for legislative advocacy.
On policies, the motion covered three major sections: the 7000s (new construction), the 8000s (community school committees) and the 9000s (board bylaws). Staff recommended removing the entire 8000 section because the community-school-committee structure is designed for unorganized, non-municipal districts and the district's municipal status makes that structure unnecessary. Staff also recommended a bylaw change that would allow the board to amend bylaws in a single meeting rather than across two meetings.
The board voted unanimously to advance the policies to a second reading, with staff noting most edits were formatting or typographical and that some policy workflow issues remain to be finalized.
Separately, the board approved a motion to send members of the legislative committee, the superintendent and up to two students to Juneau Feb. 8—1 to attend the ASB legislative plan and youth advocacy institute to meet legislators and advocate for student priorities. Staff said one student candidate had already submitted an advocacy letter and the district expects to select participants through principals. The travel motion passed by unanimous roll call.
Board discussion also included procedural notes about an upcoming joint work session with the borough assembly on Feb. 27 and a reminder that dinner will be served by the borough at the event.
