Denali Borough board delays adoption of goals, forms ad hoc committee

The Denali Borough School board voted to postpone adopting its 2024-25 board goals and established an ad hoc committee to refine goal language and recommend action steps.

During a work session led by Superintendent Dan, trustees reviewed three documents: a draft 2024-25 board goals document, last year's approved goals and the administration's DBSD priorities. The superintendent asked trustees to spend several minutes reviewing the materials and to note changes they wanted discussed at the regular meeting.

Trustee Dawn moved to postpone adoption of the goals to the September meeting and to form an ad hoc committee of Katie Greenberg, Shreve and Jenna Ham to work on the goals; the motion was seconded and approved by roll call. The full board agreed the small group should draft clearer, more specific goal language tied to measurable actions and that the remainder of the board should provide comments by email in the interim.

Superintendent Dan said the intent is to align board statements with district priorities and the strategic plan and to identify concrete steps the board can use to hold itself and administration accountable. Trustees discussed options for community engagement, regular periodic reviews (suggested quarterly work sessions), and how school-level data might be used to refine target metrics.

The board took no final action on the goals at the meeting; the ad hoc committee is expected to present recommended language and proposed action steps when the board reconvenes in September.
