Council weighs expensive digital welcome-sign quotes, members urge cheaper alternatives

City staff presented two vendor quotes for a new welcome sign and LED display options, prompting council members to question whether the cost and maintenance justify the purchase.

Speaker 3 said there are two principal options: a larger LED sign quoted near $98,000 and a smaller 4.5-by-16-foot option quoted at about $69,001.11. "That was $69,001.11," Speaker 3 noted while reviewing the vendor estimate and clarified the quotes exclude electrical hookup, permitting and other installation costs.

Council members raised several concerns: trees that will obscure signage in full leaf, whether existing electrical infrastructure would support the display, the staff time required to manage frequent content requests, and whether the city should instead pursue sponsored placements with local banks or use school art to preserve a low-cost, community look. "69 is just too high for me at this point," one council member said. Another recommended postponing a decision to study lower-cost alternatives and potential donations or sponsorships.

Staff also said that the quoted signs were static-text LED units (to avoid distracting animations along the highway) and that the prices do not include electrical hookup or permits. Members asked staff to gather additional options, costs for electrical and permitting, and potential sponsorship or partnership opportunities before returning the item to a future agenda.

Next steps: staff will compile more pricing options and proposals for content management and return with recommendations at a later meeting.
