Stanford council reappoints several board members, pledges to check yield sign after storm

At its Jan. 9 meeting, the Stanford City Council unanimously approved reappointments to planning, housing, ambulance and water boards, postponed a Volunteers of America presentation because of weather, and said it will ask state transportation officials to investigate a damaged yield sign near Walmart after a resident’s request.
Mayor Dalton Miller called the Stanford City Council to order at 6:30 p.m. on Jan. 9 and the council moved quickly through routine business, approving minutes and reappointing members to several city boards.
The council unanimously approved a motion by Councilman Eddie Carter, seconded by Councilman Joe Tackett, to accept the minutes of the Dec. 12, 2024 meeting. The body then approved Mayor Miller’s recommended reappointments to the Planning and Zoning Commission — Ward Hart and Greg Pettit — following a motion by Carter and a second from Tackett.
The council also reappointed Greg Padgett (acting chairman) to the Stanford Housing Authority after a motion from Councilman Bill Miracle and a second from Councilman Joe Tackett, and it reappointed Dr. William Stafford to the Ambulance Board on a motion by Councilman Ronnie Deatherage and second by Councilman Jerry Wilkinson. Councilman Eddie Carter moved, and Councilman Joe Tackett seconded, the reappointment of Alvie Atwood to the Stanford Water Commission; Mayor Miller noted that, by ordinance, water commission members must be city residents.
During public comments, resident Ella Mae Curlis thanked city staff and volunteers for clearing streets after the recent storm. Resident Missy Martin asked the council to replace a yield sign at the turn into town in front of Walmart; Mayor Miller said he would ask Police Chief Zach Middleton to check the location and contact the District 8 transportation office because the road and right of way are state-controlled.
A scheduled presentation by Volunteers of America was postponed because of weather. Mayor Miller also shared several informational items: that Jan. 9 was Law Enforcement Appreciation Day, a 250th-anniversary planning meeting is set for Jan. 23 at the library, the City Officials Academy runs Jan. 15–17 at the Embassy Suites, and a training and awards banquet is scheduled for Feb. 17. New Main Street banners for the 250th anniversary have arrived and images will be sent to council members.
With no further business, Councilman Bill Miracle moved to adjourn, Councilman Joe Tackett seconded, and the meeting was adjourned at 6:55 p.m.
