Stamping Ground to seek county funds for Commonwealth Drive resurfacing; council approves police trailer purchase

The Stamping Ground City Commission voted Oct. 1 to seek County Priority Projects Program (CPPP) funds to resurface Commonwealth Drive and the access road to the Fire Department training center. Streets Commissioner Billy Swartz said he requested a repair quote and completed the CPPP form and will provide photos to accompany the application. The motion, made by Commissioner Swartz and seconded by Mayor Keith Murphy, passed unanimously, 5-0.
The commission also approved purchasing a 6-by-12 trailer for $3,695 to store barricades, cones and other police equipment. Police Chief Don Whitlock said the department identified the trailer and that Commissioner Swartz offered to pay for it from Streets funds; the motion by Commissioner Swartz, seconded by Commissioner Jennifer Jones, passed 5-0.
Chief Whitlock provided several additional department updates. He asked staff to complete an encroachment form to retain recently installed digital speed signs and said the department is scouting locations for Flock cameras and pursuing permission to mount a Condor 360-degree camera on a Kansas Utilities (KU) pole and obtain AT&T sign-off. He said the department will research grant opportunities to help pay for three new MDT laptops — one per patrol vehicle and the backup vehicle — that are estimated at roughly $3,000 each. Whitlock also raised the possible need for a school resource officer (SRO) contract and reported follow-up on recent noise complaints and an investigation into the source of a high-powered rifle shot.
