Denali Borough board approves nonprofit’s plan to provide daily free lunches to three schools

The Denali Borough School District board voted to approve a local nonprofit’s proposal to provide free daily lunches to students at Anderson, Cantwell and Tri Valley schools.
The board took the action after a lengthy work‑session presentation from Alaskan Bounty for Children (ABC) and prolonged discussion about logistics and sustainability. ABC leaders said they have a $25,000 borough grant, have sought larger philanthropic grants and plan to combine donations, in‑kind contributions and vendor discounts to cover costs. “We are going to be doing that through a variety of private donations as well as grants,” an ABC representative told the board.
Superintendent Dan warned trustees the district could incur incidental costs if it hosts the program, including utilities, supervision and vehicle use for deliveries. Dan also urged the board to consider board policy on accepting large gifts and the need to avoid creating an expectation the district must continue a program if outside funding ends.
Trustees pressed ABC on practical questions: whether using Cantwell as a centralized commissary would reduce vendor turnaround time, how often vendors would deliver, and whether volunteers and existing community fundraisers would be displaced. An ABC leader said the nonprofit prefers a five‑day model for efficiency and is developing written standard operating procedures so the program can be transferred if leadership changes.
The vote was taken by roll call. The motion to approve ABC’s regular daily lunch service passed by majority vote (recorded roll call: Peyton Hammond — No; Boris Shreve — No; Jenna Hamm — Yes; Lauren Bruntz — Yes; Amy Greenby — Yes; Kristen Randall — Yes; Amy Oland — No; Dawn Adams — Yes). The board authorized the administration to oversee the program’s implementation and to report back on any district costs and operational issues.
The board and ABC leaders agreed follow‑up reporting will include updates on vendor commitments, volunteer partnerships, grant status and any unanticipated costs to the district. ABC said it will continue fundraising and supplier outreach and invited board and community members to volunteer.
The board’s decision follows public comments from Lions Club and community members who urged support for feeding students and noted the limits of volunteer‑run lunch sales. The administration and trustees emphasized the need to protect existing volunteer relationships while implementing the new, district‑wide service.
