Road supervisor reports blown grader engine, DEQ to inspect four county gravel pits

At the Aug. 9 meeting in Winnett, Road Department supervisor Ray Rowton reported several maintenance and staffing issues, and said the state Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) notified the county it will inspect four county gravel pits.
Rowton said a John Deere grader has a blown engine and that his contact at RDO quoted $35,000 to purchase and install a remanufactured engine. He reported that a county employee, Alec Krug, has resigned; crews are blading Lower River Road and Jeremy has nearly finished work on Yellowwater Road. Rowton said the backhoe received a new starter and that I‑State has not yet begun work on the Yellow Truck transmission but plans to start the following week.
Rowton said DEQ will inspect four gravel pits in Petroleum County: Siebert Pit (referred to as Doman's), Hans Marks, Iverson Pit (Upper Flatwillow) and Yellowwater Pit (Hoge's). The minutes record that guest Nick Winfield phoned about a DEQ violation letter and requested an extension for the county's response.
Rowton also raised emergency management items, reporting that a Montana Weather Services representative plans to meet with county staff to discuss emergency weather and that he would like to set up a DES Facebook page for public information.
