Commissioners authorize purchase of $76,000 tar kettle for Highway Department

The Richland County Board authorized the Highway Department to purchase a new tar kettle after staff reported the existing unit has burner problems and a warped tank. Jesse Sedler told commissioners a $3,000 repair might address the immediate problem but probably would be temporary; a new unit costs about $76,000 and Sedler said the expense fits his budget. The Board voted unanimously to authorize the purchase and gave Sedler discretion to scrap or repair and sell the old kettle.
Sedler also updated the Board on construction scheduling: Knife River Materials is slated to start work on County Road 16 on Aug. 5 with a target completion in early October. He noted one landowner remains uncooperative on right-of-way payment and commissioners said offers should be consistent across property owners.
By approving the procurement, the Board provided the Highway Department with an immediate equipment replacement path while allowing the director to manage disposition of the existing asset.
The motion to authorize the purchase passed by unanimous vote.
