Ladysmith council approves asbestos-abatement contract, caboose repairs, lease change and event permit

The Ladysmith Common Council on June 22 approved a series of routine measures at a meeting in Ladysmith Council Chambers that included business on property maintenance, community events and a lease amendment.
Mayor Grotzinger opened the meeting at 5:15 p.m. and the council approved the June 8 minutes and the evening's agenda by voice vote. Director of Public Works K. Gorsegner reported that asbestos removal is the next step before demolition of a former Department of Natural Resources office building; the council accepted the low bid from Brack Thermal Systems for $3,810 and authorized the abatement and related notifications to the Department of Natural Resources.
Councilor Al Christianson proposed additional restoration work on the visitors-center caboose, saying the work would include installing flashing and proper trim around windows. The council approved up to $1,000 for that work; the vote recorded one abstention.
Administrator Christianson presented a request from a free circus to use city property July 25–26. Councilors discussed the choice of site and recalled that trucks at a prior event had created ruts on adjacent property; the council approved use of the Industrial Park lot for the circus.
On a separate item prompted by auditor recommendations, the council approved adding Appendix C to the ICAA lease for the thrift-store property to allow either party to terminate the lease in writing, contingent on review by City Attorney Rowe.
Other routine business included approval of a presented list of operator licenses and department reports. Fire Chief K. Gibbs reported the department plans to hire two to three firefighters in July.

The meeting also included routine district reports and department updates. The council adjourned at 6:30 p.m.
