Trustees voted July 17 to ask Attorney Eric Larson to send notices to residents on private drives where Caledonia Fire Department reported impeded access. The motion, made by Constable Rocco Castellano and seconded by Trustee Paul Schroeder, passed unanimously. President Roger Mellem said any action should be guided by the Chief’s assessment of fire protection needs.
The board discussed specific locations flagged by the fire department—Shore Acre Drive, Lansdale Lane, South Creek and Cross Creek—and concerns that hydrant access would require hose lines to cross neighboring backyards in some locations. The motion directs the Village Attorney to contact affected residents to identify remedies to restore safe access for first responders and public-works vehicles.
Separately, trustees were informed that a Racine County Sheriff inspection found 39 S Vincennes Circle uninhabitable, with broken windows and a caved-in ceiling visible from outside. The Racine County Health Department and Sheriff deferred the matter to the Village; Clerk Panthofer was directed to email Attorney Larson to request legal assistance. Constable Castellano expressed concern about potential structural failure.
Chief Tommy Sharrett also proposed installing numeric keypads at Village Hall to avoid re-keying after staffing changes; Clerk Panthofer will obtain bids.
