Resident urges council to pursue playground grant; American Legion seeks power for cemetery flagpole

At the June 9 Echo City Council meeting resident Daneen Dhoore told the council she had identified a grant opportunity to fund playground equipment for the city park and said she would forward the grant information to City Clerk Brian Pitzl for follow‑up.
James Dunphy, representing the Echo American Legion, raised concern that the cemetery flagpole lacks electricity. Dunphy said solar lights are available but “don’t necessarily last very long,” and said he would look into pricing to run electrical service to the pole from nearby utility poles. He also said the American Legion would be willing to supply flags for the cemetery.
Kristi Fernholz of the Upper Minnesota Valley Regional Development Commission briefed the council on the commission’s role and said the agency has projects and assistance available to help communities. The clerk and council did not record a decision at the meeting to commit to a capital project for the playground or to run electrical service to the flagpole; both items were left for follow‑up and further cost detail.
The council approved other agenda items later in the meeting, including licenses for the Echo Days celebration and a small equipment purchase, but did not resolve the playground or flagpole items during this session.
