The Hazen City Commission approved an amendment to the city's holiday-pay policy so police officers will receive eight hours of straight-time pay for holidays even if they are not scheduled to work.
Staff (Speaker 5) explained the change had been proposed because the police department's prior practice made it difficult to avoid overtime when shuffling schedules around for holidays. "This policy amended that effective September 1 so that even if an officer is not scheduled to work on the holiday, they will receive 8 hours of straight time paid to make it similar to the other departments," Speaker 5 said. The amendment was moved, seconded and approved on a roll call.
Commissioners noted the policy preserves scheduling and reduces overtime risk for the department while matching other municipal employees' holiday compensation rules. The transcript indicates the policy affects a small number of officers in practice because some officers would still be scheduled to work the holiday shifts.
