The City of Lancaster Plan Commission voted to forward to the City Council, without recommendation, a request from resident Brian Fager to purchase about five acres of city-owned land along Highway K.
Brian Fager presented an updated map and told commissioners that Austin Engineering is preparing a formal survey. He said his intent is to build a single-family house on the parcel. City administrator Michael Kuchta explained that the sale must follow the ordinance-driven process the council uses and that state/local rules do not require a finding of public need; Kuchta said the City Council could act as soon as next Monday.
Commissioners raised concerns about public benefit. Several members noted the parcel would be in the township rather than inside the city limits and therefore likely would not expand the city tax base; commissioners also cautioned that once sold, the city would probably not regain the land. Carl Thiede moved to forward the request to City Council without recommendation; Matt Pennekamp seconded. The motion passed on a roll call vote, 5–2, with Chair Shayne LaBudda and Commissioner Terry Meyer recorded as opposed.
The commission’s action forwards the matter to the City Council for final consideration; the minutes do not record any council decision.
