Rockets & Rails drew about 10,000 people, organizers tell Newton commission

City events staff reported strong turnout and no major incidents from the July 3 Rockets & Rails celebration. Erin McDaniel told commissioners the city "can estimate that we had about 10,000 people in attendance throughout the park," including attendees of a concurrent Mexican American softball tournament.
McDaniel said most non-fireworks costs were covered by private sponsorships and that "the bulk of the funding for this event came from Convention and Visitors Bureau funds, and that went toward the fireworks show." Vendors reported selling out and staff said there were no heat-related emergencies during the event.
Commissioners praised the event's turnout and community feel and discussed including funding for a similar event in the 2027 budget; McDaniel said staff included funding for the event in the proposed 2027 budget and will continue planning.
The commission also presented a themed America250 yard-decorating award to Rhonda and Dawn Gilger for a historic home at 108 South Main. Rhonda, accepting the award, described buying and restoring a 118-year-old house and said she and her spouse chose Newton because they "love the spirit of the community."
