Fire chief reports 20% rise in emergency runs, updates on engine repairs and staffing

Chief Bolton updated the Town of Clayton council on recent fire-department operations and maintenance.
Bolton described a recent equipment issue in which a truck door did not latch, which caused damage to a wall that was repaired via insurance; he said the replacement door is delayed by approximately six weeks. He also reported a new large air compressor and near-complete wiring work for a backup generator that requires the final hookup by an electrician.
On operations, Bolton said the department has seen “a 20% increase of runs from this time last year,” adding, “As of July 1, we were at 616 calls. That time last year, we were at 512.” He noted that 95 of the runs were in the Town of Clayton and that some structure-fire responses involved mutual aid. Bolton said the department’s cadet program has moved at least one participant into reserve firefighter status and that the department is recruiting additional medics to restore higher-level staffing.
Bolton also described ongoing efforts to update business contact information for dispatch to streamline responses and said station renovations at Hazelwood are expected to be complete around October, which would free space for expanded crew facilities.
The chief did not request immediate council action; he said staff would provide further details on facility changes and staffing as those plans progress.
