District updates human growth and development guidelines; board to vote Aug. 10

John Krennick, who presented the district’s revised human growth and development guidelines on July 13, told the board the materials had not been reviewed since 2016 and that the revisions focus on age-appropriateness, accuracy and clearer parent notification procedures.
Krennick said the updates add a cover-page parent guide for each grade, clarify that parents will be notified by the teacher before material is taught, and move or reword several grade-level objectives. “Our human growth and development guidelines haven’t been updated or reviewed since 2016,” Krennick said. He described specific edits: removal of a problematic descriptor in the Grade 6 objectives, added language for Grade 8 specifying that identifying risky behaviors “may result in legal involvement,” and a reordering in Grade 9 to place guidance about questions on abortion next to contraception guidance.
Why it matters: these guidelines govern classroom instruction on sensitive health topics for grades 4–9 and include procedures for parent preview and notification. Krennick said resources are available online and that parent preview materials will be explicit about what will be taught at each grade level.
Board members asked whether students had been on the review committee; Krennick said a student was selected but had a schedule conflict on the meeting day and could not attend. A board member also raised a request to strengthen emphasis on hepatitis B and HPV vaccination content in the materials; that request was noted for consideration.
Next steps: staff said the guidelines will return to the board for action on Aug. 10. The board also noted that associated emergency care guidelines and the Oak Creek High School safety (crime statistics) report will be on upcoming agendas, with the next regular board meeting set for Aug. 24.
