The Wayzata Public Schools Board voted July 13 to adopt two personnel and compliance policies: Policy 403 (Harassment and Violence) and Policy 5.10 (Nondiscrimination and Title IX grievance procedure).
Executive Director of Human Resources Dave Lutz told the board the policies were reviewed at length by the policy committee and by the district's legal counsel to ensure compliance with state and federal requirements. He said the recommended district versions closely follow the Minnesota School Boards Association model language but separate the grievance procedure from policy as a regulation. "Utilizing a policy version that [legal counsel] support will ensure we maintain strict compliance with the law and are able to navigate investigations effectively," Lutz said.
Lutz said the harassment policy is limited to conduct that meets the strict federal Title IX or protected-class harassment definitions, and that other concerning behavior would still be addressed through other district policies (for example, employee handbook procedures, bullying or hazing policies). The board discussed the committee's review and legal input, then approved the recommended versions in a voice vote.
The board thanked the policy committee and district staff for the review. The adopted policies will be posted in the board packet materials and implemented according to district regulations and training protocols.
