Council members on April 27 agreed to form a small committee to prepare applications for USDA water grants after a reported punch list of Capitol items and concerns about an unresolved leak in the borough water system.
Councilman Ciasullo reported receiving a punch list from Rob Lawler that prioritized leak detection work and warned the borough could face fines if leak detection is not addressed. CFO Mike Marceau told the council that depending on the estimated cost the borough may need to put the work out to bid. Councilman DeMeo proposed forming a committee to assemble grant applications; the committee will include Councilman DeMeo, Councilman Ciasullo and Councilman Gordon.
The council also discussed ongoing DPW work: Windriver has completed most basins under budget but several basins must be rebuilt and several pipes (on Edison, Wilson and Madison) will need replacement. Council members raised concerns about continuity after Ken Smith’s imminent departure from DPW; Mayor George P. Hutnick said he would temporarily assume responsibility and asked the council to advertise for an assistant DPW supervisor.
Councilman DeMeo moved to place an advertisement for an assistant supervisor; Councilman Gandarinho seconded and the motion passed on roll call with five yeas and one absence. Members noted that the ad must list the salary consistent with the governing ordinance.
Bridge infrastructure: Councilman Gordon reported meetings with county engineers on Bridge Street and recommended a contingency plan with the OEM director in case the bridge becomes unusable. Council members discussed shared services with neighboring towns as part of contingency planning.
What’s next: the USDA grant committee will meet to prepare applications and the borough will post an ad for an assistant DPW supervisor; the council will request cost estimates before deciding whether to bid water-system leak work.
