Montello council names green space after late Mayor Jim Houdek despite citizen objections

The Montello Common Council voted March 2 to name the city’s new green space after the late Mayor Jim Houdek.
Dennis Schrimpf moved the dedication and Bill Faulkner seconded; the motion carried. The council debated several routine items earlier in the meeting before taking up the dedication.
During the public comment period Karlene Utke said she believed naming the green space after Houdek was a mistake and asked the council about a second payment for the city’s fire truck. Maureen Krivanek said she will file a complaint alleging council members were rude during the discussion. Council President Ken Streich reminded speakers that citizen comments must pertain to agenda items and advised residents with additional questions to contact their alderperson.
The dedication followed unanimous or near-unanimous approval of multiple committee minutes earlier in the session. The council set no additional conditions on the dedication during the March 2 meeting. The council’s next meeting is scheduled for April 6, 2026.
