Police chief presents mostly level-funded 2025 budget; uniforms, software rise

Police Chief Jason Bachus presented the Town of Orford’s preliminary 2025 Police Department budget at the Selectboard meeting on Oct. 16, saying most line items were proposed at current-year levels.
Chief Bachus highlighted a few adjustments: prosecution was trimmed from $7,410 to $7,300; the uniforms line was increased from $1,500 to $3,000 to cover a replacement vest, and Bachus said he will apply for a federal grant that would cover 50% of that expense; computer-software spending rose from $7,050 to $7,300; and $500 was added under federal-grant-paid expenses. He told the Selectboard that salaries and benefits will be added later after the board determines the COLA and how much employees will contribute toward benefits.
The budget presentation did not include any warrant-article requests from the Police Department. The Selectboard did not adopt final salary or benefits figures during the meeting; those items will be completed once the board finalizes the COLA and employee contribution percentages.
