Crested Butte council adopts 5-year housing and community spaces strategies, approves leases and referrals

The Crested Butte Town Council approved several planning and administrative items at its May 18 meeting, including adoption of a 5-Year Housing Strategy and a 5-Year Community Spaces Strategy, approval of a referral letter on the Lower Verzuh amended proposal, authorization of a business lease with Mountain Mentors LLC, and appointments to a Community Outreach and Education Subcommittee.
Councilors directed staff to make identified enhancements to the housing strategy and to return with a review in one year. Councilor Mallika Magner moved to adopt the housing strategy as amended and Councilor Beth Goldstone seconded; the motion passed on a roll-call vote. The council also adopted the community spaces strategy after Councilors Kate Guibert and John O’Neal, who served on the working group, affirmed their support; O’Neal moved and Guibert seconded.
On the consent agenda, the council approved minutes from a May 4 special meeting, a first-quarter 2026 financial update, the first amendment to the Mineral Point ground lease, and a letter supporting trail scoping between the Whetstone housing development and town. The council also approved Resolution 09, Series 2026, authorizing a business lease with Mountain Mentors LLC; that item was handled on the consent agenda and approved by roll-call vote.
Councilors amended and approved a referral letter from Community Development for the Lower Verzuh amended proposal and directed staff to incorporate suggested edits. The council appointed Councilors Beth Goldstone and Kate Guibert, with Mayor Ian Billick as alternate, to a Community Outreach and Education Subcommittee to work with staff on outreach and education matters.
Council members also discussed a proposed municipal-code change (Section 13-5) to permit two residential units under shared ownership to share trash cans beginning with the next enrollment period; the council generally supported the change and asked staff to draft ordinance language and solicit public feedback at a future meeting. The meeting closed with committee updates, scheduling of upcoming work sessions and meetings, and adjournment at 8:42 p.m.
