Depew opens zoning public hearing but keeps it open while lawyers finish draft

The Village Board of Trustees opened a public hearing July 13 on proposed zoning changes (Local Law No. 3 of 2026) but left the hearing open for further drafting and review.
At 7:20 p.m. Mayor Kevin Peterson moved to open the hearing and trustees seconded and carried the motion. Village attorney Sam Alba told the board the zoning update was not ready to close: "We're still working on that... Comments were continuing to come in Friday afternoon," he said, and advised keeping the hearing open until a revised draft is available.
Sam Alba said the changes are intended to modernize archaic or missing verbiage to improve enforceability and make the zoning-code process more efficient; he described the work as largely edits and small tweaks rather than sweeping changes. The board agreed to revisit the public hearing when counsel circulates the prepared draft.
The public hearing remains open; trustees said they will schedule closing or further action once the draft is complete and distributed to trustees and the building department for comment.
