Plaistow Recreation Commission adds three members, sets spring and summer program dates

The Plaistow Recreation Commission approved the addition of three new members and set key dates for spring and summer programming during its Feb. 12, 2025 meeting at the Norman L. Major Building.
Jennifer Gusler, Plaistow’s recreation director, presented the department’s report and outlined seasonal scheduling and program needs. The commission recorded that fields and the playground are expected to open the week of April 3 pending the spring thaw, with an official opening day on Sunday, May 4. The Plaistow Baseball & Softball season is scheduled April 6–June 22, and the department is working with Mission Turf on the upper field.
The commission approved the January 2025 minutes after Pat Buckley moved approval and Chair Tyler Schorman seconded; the minutes passed 4-0-0. Chair Schorman moved to add Jessica Foland, Chaz Hill and Amanda Portillo to the commission; that motion was approved (vote tally not specified in the transcript). The commission noted the new members will require background checks and discussed whether checks should be required every two years or every five years; the frequency was not resolved at the meeting.
Gusler described planned programming for spring and senior offerings: Forever Fit (starts in March), a floral-arranging class (March 13), a blanket-making class (March 19), and regular senior events including Bingo and Bagels and a monthly senior craft class. Several volunteer-run events — kids movie nights, tween nights and family game nights — were flagged as needing volunteer help.
The department outlined Summer Rec (scheduled June 23–Aug. 8) and said it currently has four counselor-in-training applications and only one or two returning counselors, which creates a staffing risk for the program. Gusler said staff are recruiting volunteers and counselors but gave no further timeline for filling positions.
The commission set its next meeting for April 9, 2025, at 6:30 PM and adjourned at 7:45 PM.
