County appropriation and potential Bates Foundation match authorized to support school athletics

The Craven County Board of Education accepted a $55,000 special appropriation from the Craven County Board of Commissioners earmarked for athletic departments at the district’s three high schools and five middle schools.
Suzanne Goodford told the board the county appropriated $55,000 effective July 1: $10,000 to each high school and $5,000 to each middle school. The appropriation requires a midyear presentation to the commissioners on expenditures; staff recommended the board accept the funds and the board approved unanimously.
Goodford also said Partners in Education will pursue a Bates Foundation grant, due Oct. 1, that would match the commissioners’ appropriation. If successful, the combined investment would amount to approximately $110,000 and be used for athletic supplies, equipment updates and facility maintenance. The board moved and unanimously authorized staff to pursue the Bates Foundation match.
Board members voiced appreciation for the intergovernmental partnership and asked for a midyear report on how the funds are spent. Staff said distribution would be upon written request and that a midyear presentation to the commissioners is required.
