Coralville advances Rec Center planning as talks continue with ICCSD over swim‑team support

Parks and Recreation Director Sherri Proud told the Coralville City Council on April 14 that planning for the city’s recreation center is advancing while talks continue with the Iowa City Community School District about district financial participation to keep competitive swim teams housed in Coralville.
Sherri Proud said the project team has been working on exterior design elements for the Rec Center and has sketched improvements for S.T. Morrison Park and concepts for the Coralville Public Library that are being considered as part of the broader site plan. She reported the selection committee reviewed eight responses to the project RFQ and will invite roughly two to three firms to final interviews based on the committee’s scoring criteria.
City Administrator Kelly Hayworth told the council staff have met with the ICCSD superintendent, chief operating officer and assistant superintendent as the city pursues a continued 35‑year relationship in which Coralville houses ICCSD competitive swim teams for IC West, IC Liberty and some middle school squads. Hayworth said those conversations are ongoing and did not include a finalized funding agreement.
No formal motions, commitments of specific funding or contract awards were reported at the work session. Council members were given a timeline for next steps: finish interviews of shortlisted firms, return to the council with a recommended firm and provide additional detail on scope and costs once finalist proposals are available.
The council did not take action during the work session; staff said they will bring recommended contract actions and budget implications back to a future council meeting.
