Sherri Proud: Mortenson needs more time on recreation center cost estimate

Sherri Proud reported to the Coralville City Council at its May 12 work session that Mortenson has asked for a few more days to complete the initial cost estimate for the proposed recreation center and that the estimate will be presented to the project core team on June 11. Proud said the team is looking for grant opportunities to fund environmental features of the project.
Proud said staff will prepare two versions of the estimate — one that includes the proposed competition pool and associated elements and one that excludes them — because of uncertainty related to the Iowa City Community School District’s (ICCSD) participation. City Administrator Kelly Hayworth and Tim Oswald are scheduled to meet with ICCSD representatives next week to clarify options and timing, Proud added. The Park Commission has reviewed the schematic design, she said.
The update provided the council with a revised timeline for the next design and costing milestone and flagged the competition-pool decision as a key variable for the project’s scope and budget. No formal action was taken at the work session.
