Pecatonica board votes 4–3 to hold Oct. 7 special meeting to consider meeting frequency

The Pecatonica Area School District board voted 4–3 to hold a special open meeting on Oct. 7 to consider whether the board should meet twice monthly or rely on special meetings for extra discussion.

The motion grew out of concerns by several board members about receiving agendas too late to prepare and limited time to solicit community input. A board member who proposed the special meeting said it would give trustees more time “to understand and see what others are thinking” and to talk with community members before votes.

Board members debated whether the meeting could exclude administration and whether the agenda for Oct. 7 had to list specific topics. The chair and others noted that open-meeting law requires topics on the published agenda; opponents argued the meeting should be narrowly procedural. The motion was amended to focus the Oct. 7 gathering on the “mechanics” of future meeting frequency and potential recommendations to the policy committee before the board made any policy changes.

The amended motion passed 4–3. The chair announced the meeting will be open to the public and that details and agenda items will be advertised according to legal requirements. No binding policy change was adopted at this meeting; the Oct. 7 session is intended to produce options and possible referrals to the policy committee.
